Glucocorticoids and the Na/Mg balance

  • Post category:HTMA

This time an unusual case of which the treatment is still ongoing, but which we do not want to withhold from you.

It concerns a 5-year-old boy with the diagnosis Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia, who was diagnosed at the end of August. A regular treatment process takes place and our specialist is currently only concerned with additional support, to ensure that he gets through the heavy treatment as well as possible. So far this seems to work very well.

The boy recently had a Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA) performed, although of course we realized that the result would be distorted by the regular treatment. As part of the treatment, he has been given Dexamethasone for some time. This drug is a synthetic glycocorticoid (adrenal cortex hormone) medication. This little boy reacts quite extreme to the use of the Dexamethasone: he is hyperactive, aggressive and has huge binge eating.

High Sodium and Potassium values, Very high Na/Mg ratio

In our long HTMA history, a clear correlation has been found between the Na/Mg ratio and the functioning of the adrenal glands. That is, the HTMA provides a picture at the cellular/extracellular level that befits a condition of excessive adrenal and to a lesser extent, thyroid activity.

Secondly, we also see that the Ca/K ratio (= thyroid ratio) and the Na/K ratio (= vitality ratio) are in line with the previous score.

This case is a special confirmation for us of our correlation between the functioning of the adrenal glands and the Na/Mg ratio. After having seen many hundreds of HTMA results, we can emphatically state that a Na/Mg ratio of 72.50 does not normally occur. This is an exceptional score that is clearly due to the use of Dexamethasone. But the phenomena that we often encounter with these sodium and magnesium values are also completely consistent with the observation in this child.
